The PCMA Education Foundation’s annual Party With a Purpose (PWAP) combines networking and entertainment with a good dose of philanthropy.
This year, Convening Leaders attendees will travel back in time with the Spazmatics, Austin’s “Revenge of the Nerds”–inspired, ’80s-pop tribute band. The eclectic cover group will provide funky tunes for everyone to get down at trendy Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater (ACL Live).
Thousands of people have attended past PWAP events, contributing more than $2.2 million to nonprofit organizations as well as to the business-events industry. Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) is the perfect choice for this year’s local charity — because of its and PWAP’s shared focuses on music and giving back.
As the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin is home to about 8,000 musicians. HAAM Executive Director Reenie Collins said that approximately 80 percent of this population makes less than $18,000 a year, even though it generates more than $2 billion a year for the local economy. Since 2005, HAAM has helped 4,200-plus eligible musicians with more than $38 million in affordable health care, which includes primary medical coverage, basic vision and dental services, and mental-health counseling.
“We are proud to say that every dollar donated to HAAM is leveraged into $7 of direct services for Austin musicians thanks to our partnerships with area health-care providers,” Collins said. “Donations from events like Party With a Purpose are what helps keep the music in Austin, Texas, alive and well.”
Event proceeds also benefit the PCMA Education Foundation and PCMA’s Giving Good (formerly Network for the Needy).
“PWAP raises much-needed funds to support our industry through scholarships, research, and educational programs,” said Stacey Shafer, senior director of operations for the PCMA Education Foundation. “It is also a great opportunity for the Foundation to give back to the local community. Attendees can feel good knowing that their ticket price helps to support so many positive initiatives.”
Tonight’s event goes from 9 p.m. to midnight, and features networking, dancing, and an open bar. Tickets are $125 per person, and are well worth the enjoyment from partying all night and paying it forward. Tickets are still available for purchase at Registration and at the Foundation booth, located on the first floor of the Austin Convention Center.
PWAP is presented by its founding and sustaining sponsor, Global Experience Specialists Inc. (GES). The Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Austin Convention Center are this year’s music and venue partners, while the event partners are Visit Houston, Visit Tampa Bay, and London & Partners.
